Launched in 2009 on the site of the former Freda Gardham Primary The School Creative Centre is an award-winning cultural hub and outstanding studio facility for over 30 resident artists, performers and makers offering a dynamic programme of events and workshops for adults and young people in East Sussex and Kent.
As well as the resident artists a number of local organisations and individuals use the facilities for workshops and The School also hires the studios for short-term residencies, exhibitions and special events.
Annual events include Open Studios in October where visitors can come and meet the artists, view the work and find out what inspires them, and in December they run a magical artist and makers fair Christmas Bizarre.
The School’s successful live music and cabaret programme attracts visitors from across the county and beyond. Many of the bands play the festival circuit and have included Senegalese superstar Nuru Kane, Ska legends Intensified and darlings of BBC 6 Music Tom Williams and The Boat. The monthly cabaret revue night Back in The Room presents comedian’s on the London comedy circuit plus songs, sketches and a few surprises.
